BJP & The Presidential Nomination Process

Political Opinions

Once again, the organisational strength and unity of #BJP was super evident when it came to nominations for the post of #PresidentOfIndia.

From what we hear and read, BJP Parliamentary Board under the leadership of #JPNadda was entrusted with the whole process. #JPNadda was the person responsible and #Modi, #AmitShah and others were only consulted.

Apparently 20 names were discussed, and for the right reasons, those 20 names are not made public maintaining the sanctity of those people who were considered.

Before making any decisions, the Board apparently seems to have formally met the President first (obviously an extension would have been possible if they so wished) and then the Vice-President (he could have been in the list as well for an elevation from Vice-President to President post). Thats the respect shown to the people occupying (and possibly aspiring) for the post.

Contrast to the way the “united” opposition handled the case. The three names (who eventually declined to be considered for the post) made the headlines even before the actual candidate was announced. Imagine how #YashwantSinha must be feeling considering he was the “fourth” person to be considered in the list!

Even the choice of the candidates itself depicts how deep or shallow the search exercise was. By choosing to nominate #DraupadiMurmu, BJP has ticked several boxes. The person herself evokes strong sentiments – not just for the people of Odisha or Eastern India but all those communities who rarely find a mention in the chapters of Nation Building.

On the other hand, #YashwantSinha ji comes across as just another seasoned politician. He was a statesman and an able administrator – no doubt about his credentials – but doesn’t evoke a “pride” feeling (or a “wow” factor in other words).

Presidential post is a very symbolic post and I wish opposition could have done better in their search and more so in communicating their choice.

Keep going #BJP. Continued to be amazed by your organisational strength and way you go about your work in the BJP office.
